Warehousing plays an important role in the logistics system of any organisation. Placing the finished products, arranging items for storage and consolidating, packing and shipping orders are some of the essential roles of a warehousing department. It provides a central location for all the functions required for the finished products till they are dispatched. Receiving goods, arranging proper atorage according to their requirements, keeping them safe till the time of dispatch and distribution as per orders are the funxfunct of the warehousing. Checking any defects in the process of receiving, storing and dispatching is also done by this department. It increases the value of the goods by reducing cycle times, lowering cost of inventory and improving customer service. Availability of the products at the right time adds to the value of the logistics. It gives economic benefits by efficient functioning, central location and storage capacity. Consolidation and accumulation operations are some examples that help in providing economic benefits. It provides safety stocking which gives service benefits.
The different types of warehouses are as follows:
- private warehouse- they are e owned and operated by suppliers for the storage of their own products for receiving, and storing them before final distribution.
Public warehouse- these are spaces leased to companies who need warehousing facilities for temporary or seasonal products.
Automated warehouse- these work on automated computer systems for the functions of warehousing. Most functions are carried by these systems relying very leas on the human resources.
Climate controlled warehouse- these are warehouse which keep the climatic conditions according to the product it stores. Some products need to be in freezing conditions until they are brought to use. Thus the warehouses will work best for maintaining such climate for storing such products.
- distribution center- these warehouse do not keep the products for a long duration but are used only for receiving and distribution of goods to the suppliers and retailers immediately. They only work as a center for the supplier and retailers to function this activity from their warehouse.
The type of warehousing system used by a company will depend on the features and functions of the company's production and product manufactured. One type of warehouse would be beneficial for a production company than other.
