How do male and female leadership styles differ in the workplace?

What gender barriers exist in the workplace?

What strategies can be used to minimize these barriers?

How can we promote effective leadership strategies and effective communication between men and women within the workplace?

Explanation / Answer

Leadership style refers to how or what strategies does one use to lead a team to achieve a shared goal. In a team, a number of members work together to achieve a common goal. To provide a direction and to achieve the goal, this group is leaded or headed by a team leader. The style with which the leader leads the group is said to be leadership style. There may not be much gender differences in team leadership. Basically any team leader, irrespective of their gender falls under these three leadership categories-

This means that leaders may be divided on the above types and cannot be segregated on the basis of gender differences.

As far as gender barriers are concerned, because of the patriarchal upbringing and gender based socialization patterns, gender barriers do exist when it comes to being a leader. People generally do not like being leaded by a female. There are stereotypes associated with a female leading a group or organization. Females are considered as a weaker sex, and therefore, are detested from being given power or positions. They are said to be suited for those professions where nurturance and care is required, for example, teaching or nursing etc. Males are stereotyped to possess power and hence are given more opportunities to prove their mettle as a head.

Giving equal opportunities, in terms of power and position to men and women may reduce this gender bias. The glass ceiling effect for females may be dealt with if the group members undergo proper gender sensitization programs. The purpose of these programs could be to create awareness that authority or leadership may be given to any individual, irrespective of their gender. A whole lot of efforts will be required to deal with this issue and changes will not happen overnight.

For promoting effective communication within an organization, proper and effective channels of communication must be open between people in general.
