Nazi Experiments
The Tuskegee Syphilis Study
Thalidomide Experiments
Death of Jessi Gelisinger (Gene Therapy Experiment)
Explanation / Answer
Jesse Gelsinger was the first person to have died due to a mishap that took place while conducting gene therapy onto him.
He has volunteered to join the research study that was being conducted by none other than University of Pennsylavania for testing outcome of gene therapy that could help save infants from certain severer diseases.
I brief, what led to Jesses' death was a viral vector that was injected in him, that led to an eventual multiple organ failure and hence brain death on the 17th of September, 1999, when he was a mere age of 18.
Now it is an onus on the experiment to provide a particular subject with all the details necessary regarding a certain experiment, in order for the experiment to obtain from the participant the 'informed consent' and along with that make them aware of their right to withdraw if they feel the need to withdraw. And, it is also the responsibility of the researcher to conduct a proper screening of the subjects and take those who they feel are competent, mentally and physically, for the given experiment.
The first ethical and moral mishap on the part of the investigator was that Jesee was not informed about the potential side effects and dangers of the given study.
He was not told about the death of two chimps who had been injected with the same viral vector as him.
And, he was not informed that two other participants had experienced painstaking side effects after the gene therapy.
He was not automatically removed from the trial due to his physical incompetency to be a subject due to his ammonia levels.
