Question

Social determinants of health.

For this assignment, select one social determinant of health and a related public health issue. You can draw upon issues discussed in class, your readings, or your own experiences. Respond to the following questions:

1. State which social determinant of health you selected and a particular related issue for that determinant (e.g., Employment. Lack of sick leave policies)

2. Describe how that social determinant may influence health in general. (e.g., delays in care and health diagnoses, more health complications because of delays)

3. Describe how this social determinant may influence maternal or child health specifically. (e.g., pregnant women may skip prenatal care visits so that they don't lose income by missing work)

4.Describe how you may adapt a public health program or policy to address your selected social determinant to achieve more equitable health outcomes. (e.g., develop state-level policies that would provide incentives for businesses to adopt sick leave policies through tax-cuts or other refunds). Below, I provide a list of potential, but not limited to, approaches for addressing health equity when developing public health programs and policies.

- Focus resources in high-risk areas

- Greater outreach, communication in high-risk areas, particular groups most affected

- Work collaboratively with communities, populations – better understand and address their needs

- Work with non-health sector to address the physical, social environments in which we live (e.g., urban planning)

- Establish political will

- Eliminate structural barriers – policies that maintain health barriers

Explanation / Answer

I would choose maternity benefits for pregnant women. In India, there is only 6 months with pay leave allowed that too after the child and without pay is 3 months. Flexibility for pregnant women sould be given in companies, so that they can bring up their child well without chaos. Many women do not want to loose their job or career hence they keep their children at day care for almost 9-10 hours a day, or do not opt for child. Many women go to office within just 6 months so that they donot lose their pay.

I would adapt improvement on quality of life for working or pregnant moms. More leave should be allowed for moms who had just had babies that too with pay. Since money is crucial factor when a family members adds, she should have moe of remote working or work from home options. She should be given flexibility in work. Or in this case even father can opt for flexibility of working. I would conduct survey of working moms and take their views so that I can develop some policys by taking their views into consideration.
