Explanation / Answer

When undertaking any research, two factors that are of utmost importance is - the time involved in the study and the cost of doing the study. Considering these factors and the research procedure both primary and the secondary research techniques are deployed. Both the research techniques are complementary to each other. For the freshness of the data and depth of information - primary technique is more suitable. Any study begins with the review or survey of secondary literature available such as scholarly articles, books and other sources (e.g. dissertations, conference proceedings) relevant to a particular issue. This is done to find out about the methods and the theory employed in previous studies. This is an essential part of any study as it provides the theoretical framework for the new study. More so, undertaking a new study involves aspirations to produce a new finding that adds to the stock of knowledge. This can be achieved only when you are aware of the gaps in the previous studies. Furthermore, at the time of doing the analysis again, the secondary sources come in handy. The new information is always collated with the secondary data. This establishes what is new in your research and what is complementing to the previous studies. SO both the research techniques are used in combination with each other.

My own research is based on a 'what makes people interested in taking selfies'. I started with doing a survey of previous studies. I used published journal articles, books on the topic and conference proceedings. This gave me the theoretical framework and methodological framework for my study. Based on this I am going to develop my questionnaire and use it to collect data. The collected data will be put through analysis and conclusion will be drawn. This way, I am going to make use of both the research techniques and produce a good research on my chosen topic.
