Question

After years of efforts to enter a white-collar profession, Cecelia finally starts her job with Anchor Insurance. She was content with the job. She found the supportive attitude of her section of the company to be very encouraging. However, very soon she started to notice the other faces of this group "togetherness". Although she savored a margarita now and then, she definitely did not believe in excessive drinking and felt the compulsion of drinking every Friday evening with her colleagues. Cecilia's absence in the Friday get-togethers strengthened the group pressure and led to her being treated differently by her colleagues. Cecelia asks her boyfriend for ways to get out of this situation at work. Case Study Questions 1. Would you identify the conflict in this case as a values conflict? Why or why not? 2 s it too late? Can Cecelia salvage the relationship she once had with her fellow workers? More importantly, should she? Why or why not? 3. What would you do if you were in Cecelia's placei? What could HR do to prevent employees like Cecelia from leaving due to situations like this?

Explanation / Answer

Answer-1- Yes, the conflict in this case is identified as a value conflict because Cecelia's values and beliefs are different from her co-workers. She has different meaning of life and going out on every Friday and drinking is not necessary for her to be in a group.

Answer-2- No, its not late. Definitely, Cecelia should save her relationship with her co workers. She should try to explain them that everybody can live in harmony with different values and beliefs. Nobody has a right to force his values on other person. Yes, Cecelia should try to improve her relations with her colleagues because she is working in a team and all group members should be united to work properly in an organization.

Answer- 3- If I were on Cecelia's place, I would try to explain my co- workers that each one of us has different opinions and values and one should respect them. I would try to accompany them sometimes to make them believe that I am also a part of their group. But I would also take care to follow my own opinions and beliefs while hanging out with them.

Answer-4- The role of HR is very important in resolving conflicts within a group. In this case, Cecelia did not want to go out every Friday and consume alcohol with her colleagues which resulted in conflict. The HR of the company should have called up a meeting for all employees and discussed the issue that all people have different personalities. He should have explain them to avoid value conflicts and told them that Cecelia is also a part of their group but she has different opinions. He should have also make her understand that group unity is important and she must accompany her co workers sometimes for the betterment of the organization and her own relationship with them.
