(Page 204) Question 1. Months before Coach Rice was fired, the Rutgers athletic director became aware of the coach's lack of emotion control. He decided a three-game suspension and a $50,000 fine would suffice as punishment. Should he have also enrolled the coach in an anger management course?

Achieving Emotional Balance in a Chaotic World TIP OF THE ICEERGAHEONGR A PERSONALITY MAKEOVER nger, one of the primary emotions discussed in this chapter, can ruin important relationships and impede your career success. Mike Rice head coach of the Rutgers University men's basketball program, was fired in 2013 after he was caught on video verbally and physically abusing players. The video, aired on ESPN, showed Rice shoving players, hurling basketballs at their heads, and shouting profanities and sexual epithets. Rice's inability to handle anger, especialy in pressure situations, was com- mon knowledge among school officials. Previously the athletic director had given Rice a three-game suspension and a $50,000 tine for alegations of verbal and physical abuse Fallout from the Rutgers abuse scandal did not end with the termination of Coach Mike Rice. Two former Rutgers University basketball players filed suit seeking damages from the school. They sought compensation for physical mental, and emotional abuse suffered under Coach Rice. The suit claimed Rutgers conspired to cover up the abuse in order to avoid bad public relations. As noted in Chapter 1, our labor force is increasingly geared toward service to clients, patients, and customers. In a service economy, relationships are usu- ally more important than products. Several national training and development organizations are offering educational programs that help workers achieve emotional balance. Fred Pryor Seminars offers Managing Emotions Under Pres- sure and the American Manageent Association offers Managing Emotions in the Workplace

Explanation / Answer

The athletic director gave Rice a 3 game suspension and a heavy fine of $50,000. This is not sufficient in my opinion. The athletic director first should have enrolled Rice in training program to attain emotional balance and deal with his anger management issues. Second, an apology to all those victimized due to Rice's anger should have been given.

Post RIce's training and therapy on anger management, he should be watched closely on his return to coaching. A support group and follow up would be beneficial. This would enable Rice also feel empowered and address his issues while still maintaining the relatioships with students and staff at the school.

Anger, is a natural emotion. The way it is expressed is what becomes problematic. One, may not be educated or learnt the right of dealing with anger. There might be different casuse and triggers for the anger outbursts. Apart from training Rice to achieve emotional balance, it would be more efficient in finding the causes and treating his anger first before learning how to cope with anger. Rice's present coping techiniques involve shouting profanities, hurling students and throwing the ball at them. This is physically and mentally abusive to the people around him. He should be taught new coping techniques that do not cause other and himself harm.

Following these steps, would have resolved Rice's issues and made him a better person and not lead to a loss of a coach for the school.
