Question

Individuals who are affected by a disability are faced with a number of issues in regards to forming interpersonal relationships with others. Those who possess physical disabilities may feel the frustration of being unable to physically interact or keep up with their peers, while those who are afflicted by cognitive and emotional disabilities may find it difficult to understand social cues and to express their inner thoughts amongst other individuals. These interpersonal barriers may leave those with disabilities frustrated with their inability to interact with others and can lead to a degradation of their self-confidence. Fortunately, the interpersonal barriers that were once seen as unbreakable can be surmounted. By simply interacting with those who are afflicted by a disability, you are allowing that individual to feel a sense of normalcy they once thought was unattainable due to their current state. That individual will then be able to slowly but surely break down their social barrier. It may take a considerable amount of time, but disabled individuals will appreciate the interaction that they receive from others who see them as a person than an outcast – a problem that is, unfortunately, still present in today’s world. There are various organizations within the United States that can assist those who possess disabilities. One example would be the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD). A cross-disability organization that aims to empower those who are disabled by advocating for disability rights across the nation. The AAPD firmly believes in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which prohibits discrimination based on disability and provides accommodations in the workplace for workers that require such measures. Thanks to the AAPD’s efforts, disabled Americans are able to apply for a job without worrying about their disability being used against them, while knowing that they are supported and accommodated should the need arises.

Explanation / Answer

For the differently abled or the disabled still there are miles to be achieved. Most of the people still pity and sympathies for the disabilities of other individuals which is a wrong notion and attitude towards them. As it makes them feel outcasts and helpless. People should have an empathetic attitude towards them, this would create a better interaction with them, that would boost up their confidence and morale. It would help others accept them as they are and would help in doing the required for the people with disabilities. Creating empathy means trying to understand their problems and issues from their viewpoint not from one's own viewpoint. Thus, it would help to eradicate the discrimination against them and would help to take strong measures for their upliftment. This would help AAPD's effort to be more effective to bring such individuals to mainstream development and be a part of nation's development and progress. For this it is important to create and promote awareness among people to support the causes of the differently abled people.
