Discussion Module 4: Research on Infancy. The textbook is Lifespan Development and Growth by Denise boyd,& helen bee. 7th edition.

1. Choose one piece of research from the chapters on Infancy that interests you. In the title of your discussion, include the topic (from the heading in the textbook) and the page number where you found the section. For example, your title might be: Brain and Nervous System, pp. 83-85.

2. Add a heading in bold: Citation. Below the heading BEGIN your discussion by citing the RESEARCH—not your textbook (find the research in the References section in the back of the textbook and copy the citation into your discussion). For example: Johnson, M. (2011). Developmental neuroscience, psychophysiology, and genetics. In M. Bornstein & M. Lamb (Eds.), Developmental science: An advanced textbook, (6th ed., pp. 201-240). New York: Psychology Press.

3. Add a heading in bold: Explanation of the Concept. Below the heading, write a paragraph, briefly EXPLAINING the concept in your own words (about 25 words in at least 3 sentences).

4. Add a heading in bold: Example. Below the heading, write a separate paragraph giving at least one specific EXAMPLE (tell a story) about the concept (at least 75 words). Your example might be from real life (yours of someone you know) or from a movie, book, or TV show. The goal is for you to apply the concepts in the chapter to a real-life situation.

Explanation / Answer

psychosocial developemnt-

(note- I do not have the textbook you have mentioned but have researched properly on the topic. hence kindly read the answer and select a matching heading from your textbook along with the page numbers)

newbornns show a variety of emotions. the first one is attraction i.e. moving close to someone or withdrawal i.e. moving away from someone. during the first two months social smilling is an engagement. when an infant passes a smile in return of a smile a connection is easily built. from 3- 5 months babies laugh and in the later months anger, fear and all the other emotions are shown. a study was conducted in which the babys reactions were noted. when a mother pays attention to a doll ignoring the baby he feels jealous and this is present from 6 months of age. after some time the baby starts differentiating between a stranger and a care giver. when a child is surrounded or held by stranger fear is generated which is expressed by crying. at around 15 months of age self recognition is seen. now the child recognises himself when he stands in front of the mirror. this leads to emotions like guilt, shame or embarrassment.

attachment-

early attachement is the desire to be close to others. subsequent relationships are made on the basis of early relationships only. the concept of attachment has 3 styles and is based on the emotions.

example of such type of development can be seen in the movie babys day out. the baby in the movie was lost and then kidnapped by some theives. the baby identified the stranger. it has been clearly shown that the baby grew up in a secure and caring environment. hence the attachment between him and his parents was that of secure attachment. when seperated he identified the kidnappers and did not get along with them. as soon as he got cloe to his parents he again got very happy.
