FULL TEXT Ohio is suing five drugmakers, the state's attorney general said Wednesday, alleging they fueled an opioid crisis in the state by misrepresenting the addictive risks of their painkillers. The lawsuit, filed in state court in Ross County, targets parent companies and various subsidiaries, including Purdue Pharma LP, Johnson &Johnson;, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., Allergan PLC and Endo International PLC's Endo Health Solutions unit. Attorney General Mike DeWine said at a news conference that the companies were dishonest with doctors about their painkillers' risks. He said they marketed heavily to general practitioners, who "may not have a particular specialty in that area. The evidence is going to show they knew what they were saying was not true and they did it to increase sales," Mr DeWine said. In a statement, Johnson & Johnson, parent of Janssen Pharmaceuticals, which sells Duragesic, said: "We firmly believe the allegations in this lawsuit are both legally and factually unfpunded. Janssen has acted appropriately responsibly and in the best interests of patients regarding our opioid pain medications, which are FDA-approved and carry FDA-mandated warnings about the known risks of the medications on every product label." Teva said it is reviewing the complaint and didn't have an immediate comment. Teva and its Cephalon Inc. unit sell the painkillers Actiq and Fentora. Purdue, maker of the painkiller OxyContin, said: "We share the attorney general's concerns about the opioid crisis and we are committed to working collaboratively to find solutions." Allergan and Endo declined to comment. Allergan sells Kadian, Norco and generic opioids. Endo, parent of Endo Health Solutions, makes the painkiller Opana Ohio has been among the states hardest hit by opioid addiction, which has helped drive U.S. overdose deaths to all-time highs. Many people became addicted by taking powerful opioid painkillers, and often then turned to heroin if they couldn't get access to pills. Public-health officials have long blamed aggressive company marketing and lax opioid painkiller prescribing for sparking the crisis In an interview, Mr. DeWine said Ohio's lawsuit is among the most comprehensiveaen by any state against opioid-painkiller makers. He said he believed only Mississippi has filed a suit similar in scope to Ohio's Some cities and counties, including Chicago and California's Orange and Santa Clara counties, have also sued opioid painkiller makers, alleging misleading marketing that fueled addiction. West Virginia sued drug distributors alleging they improperly flooded the state with addictive painkillers Perhaps the biggest legal hit to a painkiller company came in 2007, when Purdue Frederick Co., an affiliate of Purdue Pharma, and three of its executives pleaded guilty in federal court to criminal charges of misleading the public about the addictive qualities of OxyContin, and agreed to pay the federal goverment and a group of states $634.5 million in fines. That settlement grew out of a multistate investigation and a federal lawsuit.

Explanation / Answer

Question: How do principles and values relate to creating an ethical organizational culture?

An organization is made up of people or group of people who may belong to different community, culture and social boundaries. Therefore organizations decides to build its own culture based on the ethics and values so the individuals working under it can adopt its culture and follow it in uniformity.

CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility):

Corporate being a inegral part of the sociey must keep in mind while devising its policies that it sholud not harm the mother nature as well as nearby society where it is imapcating while doing business.

Specific points from the article:

Let us first understand what are opioids. Opioids are powerful pain killers used for centuries to relieve pain and opioids work by Binding opioid receptors in the brain and blocking pain signals because our brain have opioid receptors and we make our own opioids called endorphins to block pain. Endorphins work only for minutes at a time whereas the newly synthesized pain relievers like oxycontin work for many hours and bind the opioid receptor more strongly. Originally derived from the poppy plant as opium many opioids today are synthesized or partially synthesized in the laboratory by changing the chemical composition of naturally occurring opioids. However scientist are working to create new and better opiates to treat pain and their efforts have also been driven by the goal of creating an opioid that target pain without creating addiction but these efforts have made with mix results that is why opiate painkillers generally creates addiction.

Even we cannot directly blame the doctors were treating the patients because while treating the patients and prescribing the opium medicines to treat the patient in an effective way doctors prescribe these medicines to the patient.

Some of the patients get treated and the move on but with the enlargement of treatment days some of the patients get addicted to the medication and they ask the physicians to give them more and more such drugs not going to the fact that they are getting addicted to the drugs.

Healthcare providers who have been trapped in such systems unable to deny this obviously addicted patient more opiate painkillers.

Some of the doctors have to Slowly discontinue such a pain killer treatments having opioids and more towards anti addiction treatment.

One of the agency of the government has declared major health threats a prescription drug epidemic and these were opioid painkillers. More than 4000 deaths involving these pain killers have been documented in the year 1999 to 2013. Opioid pain killers sold through retail pharmacy which were obtained through prescription written by doctors in between the year 1999 and 2010 were coincided with prescription opioid related deaths.

Now let us understand what are the drugs and the law are present for such drugs: in the year 1906 the pure food and drug act required manufacturers to produce the list of habit forming drugs which they manufacture and label it on the label claim but this act did not restricted the use of such drugs.

But this act prevented importation and sale of opiates except for medicinal purpose.

Now coming to the case of Johnson and Johnson pharmaceutical company which has a credo statement for the doctors nurses and patients for producing high quality medicines. It was said that Johnson and Johnson was involved in supplying the opioid drugs to the market at large extent for 2 years which resulted many deaths during the epidemic of opioid related treatments. It was alleged that the firm has sent excessive amount of opiate medications to parts of the United States and contributed this over supply addiction and death.

It is difficult to ascertain that whether the company has really supplied such medicines in order to earn money only because whenever there is a need a pharma company makes large amount of drugs to fulfill the need and market demand and being a large pharma company Johnson and Johnson has supplied the drugs as per market demand.

There are many research available to support the pharma company in the sense that completing the market demand cannot always be blamed as allegations and to report it as a consequence of epidemic deaths because of addiction drugs which were used to treat the pain.
