Market Research on the salaries offered for the same position in a similar industry and company has to be done before negotiating the salary and benefits, It forms the base of the negotiation hence it is very important. Proper and thorough market research will enable you to justify your side of negotiation. And would prepare you to counter the justifications coming from across the table. If proper market research is not done then you will have to agree to the terms of the employer as you would have no knowledge of what to negotiate on.
