UNDRSTANDING ETHICS IN HEALTH AND ILLNESS

INTRODUCTION:

Just as ethical aspects concerning all human interactions, without ethics there could be no existence of humanity. and when we talk about health and illness one can't imagine any unethical issue, act or behavior. But in the last week all medical and social workers and humanity felt ashamed for the heart shaking incident of Gorakhpur when dozens of children died at the Baba Raghav Medical College Hospital.

Brief discussion of the article:

An intervening night of 10th and 11th August 2017,there was acute shortage of Oxygen cylinder supply at the Gorakhpur district(U.P. India) tertiary Care Hospital leading to death of approximately 70 children due to lack of oxygen. It was alleged that the supplier of oxygen cylinder had discontinued supply after his payment of approximately 68 Lac Rupees was not cleared by the Hospital Administrative authority, namely the dean of the medical college. The administration later rubbished the claim of any deficiency of oxygen as being the cause of death of children and attributed it to the negligible of doctors involved in treatment and administration of the hospital. It was also said that the district and whole area was an endemic zone for Japanese Encephalities and that leads to death of many children since long time.

Rationale why this is an important societal issue:

This incident has raised a big question mark over credibility of Government medical and hospitals as well as of government in their ability to provide basic health care facility. This was not the issue of billing only.it was matter of life of innocents. How government can ignore, when they can pay for the security of government dignities and not only for security but luxuries of them. And it did not happen in one day or sudden, why government did not pay for oxegen cylinder, why government did not think about the consequences of such ignorance.

Rationale why this is an important issue for medical social worker:

This issue has raised doubts in minds of public as well as the medical social workers itself about their own work and whether they are doing justice by encouraging people to seek treatment aimed early intervention from such hospitals which lack the basic facility or apathy of the administration in dealing with such critical issue casually.

The incidence has risked the basic fundamental virtue of trust between public and medical social workers.

It has psychologically adversely impacted the enthusiasm and zeal of medical social workers. How can social worker can trust on government if it goes on,because governmemt did not awake yet and trying to get rid from of their responsibilities by blaming others.

Potential implications of report for policy/practice, and or ethics:

General overhauling of healthcare system is needed.

Immediately reassuring measures needs to be taken and Government and administrative level to deal with such crucial incidence. Accountability and responsibilty fixing policy needs to be made and implemented.
