Question

Can you help me reply back to this discussion

In your second post, choose another student's initial contribution to the thread, and comment critically and meaningfully on it. Critical evaluation doesn't mean that you must disagree -- however, if you come to the same conclusion as someone, you should still contribute something substantial and meaningful to the conversation. Can you think of factors that the student didn't consider, but that may support his/her conclusion? If you disagree, explain why, again, in a substantial, critical, and meaningful post. Finally, if Shue and Hill were here participating in the conversation, what do you think they would say about the thread you are working on? Would they agree or disagree with you or the student? Why?

Torture can be morally justified or even mandatory in certain situations. For example, torturing an individual to prevent him from hurting many other individuals. Or, killing an individual who poses a threat to the public. There are many reasons why the world views torturing as immoral: dehumanization, fear, or terribleness of misery. Whether torture is moral or not depends on many factors. Torture is not always the solution but could also be the only solution. The law should state that when an individual commits a crime he is signing away his right to morality. It is best that the law does not have a need to protect against torture; however,I believe that cruel punishments should not be the only way. There is a scale of the severeness of torture and it is not always necessary

Explanation / Answer

Torture depends on the severity of the crime in question and the cooperation of the criminal in question. Earlier torture was part and parcel of the investigation whether or not the criminal cooperates or not. Today, with the humanitarian views and human rights organizations the investigation doesn’t involve any torture unless the criminal is a real threat and there is very less time. Police use force to subdue criminals who doesn’t cooperate during the investigation. I also agree with the argument that torture shouldn’t be always involved unless the criminal puts more people’s life in danger because some people won’t cooperate if there is no physical torture.
