Question
In the second grade, Danielle was identified as a student with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. During the elementary school years, she had such a busy brain that she failed to learn some of the strategies that have become automatic for her friends. Now Danielle is in high school and has made up her mind to be a medical doctor. She realizes some of the demands of the profession because her mom is a doctor. Danielle is serious about learning and determined to teach herself some learning strategies to improve her academic achievement. Identify at least one learning strategy that will transfer to many of the subjects Danielle will take in high school and college. Describe the stages of learning she will experience as she teaches herself the strategy and develops the ability to transfer the strategy to new learning situations.
Explanation / Answer
Danielle depending upon her simulation, whether it is visually, auditory can be provided with strategies as such.
If Danielle is visually simulated, then visual techniques can be used. Her subjects can be learnt in pictures, graphs, charts. To rehearse, she can think of a pictorial story. Learning from the teachers should be more of gestures. Also hand outs of the taught lesson should be provided. These have to be brightly coloured and better if depicted in the form of a story.
Danielle would initially feel difficulty in making herself follow the routine. She has fill her room with colourful notes. The support of her family is required to keep her motivated in the initial stages. Danielle's scores would improve but she should not strive to compete with others but with her own performance. Auditory distractions should be minimized. Other visual things which can deviate her from the study should be kept away. Rehearsing and having visual cues would help her in all stages of learning. Eventually her performance would drastically improve.
