Explanation / Answer

Abraham Maslow’s theory of self-actualisation emphasis on a hierarchy which includes every individual’s needs. The lower level needs must be met in order to further climb up the ladder to reach self actualisation. The five levels include; physiological needs like food, sex, shelter. Once one’s physiological needs are met a person moves to the next level which is security needs like, money, investment and etcetera. The third level is social needs which involves the feeling of being loved and belongingness. The fourth level includes esteem needs which include one’s self esteem and self confidence. Every individual likes to be valued and appreciated by others. The last level or the highest level is, self actualisation. The student in the above case is at the fourth level. The student has slid into depression because he has a low self esteem. He would like people to value him but he is bullied which takes a toll on his confidence and self esteem.
