Question

Please help with my homework I am struggling with. Thank you. John has enrolled in an art class and is learning how to convey depth perception in his drawings. John had thought about Gestalt principles of vision perception. He claims that these principles are applicable only to textbook illustrations and therefore are not very useful. Describe the three things John can do in his drawings to convey depth convincingly. Explain how Gestalt principles can be applied to everyday and real-life vision perceptions. Consider a community where most people have achromatopsia. Describe this vision disorder and its causes. Based on what you know about rod and cone vision, explain how the community could be modified to compensate for this vision disorder.

Explanation / Answer

Depth perception can be effectively depicted through drawings. There are certain visual tricks that can be used for the same. One of them is through showing depth in drawing by working from light to dark, with darker objects appearing further back in space. This can be achieved with a series lines with the cross hatching technique. Artists who have hones their skills in this often tend to use techniques such as light strokes that recede into space in order to get this visual effect in their art pieces. Such gestalt principles can be used to bring about any visual impact to art work.

Achromatopsia is a condition characterized by a partial or total absence of colour vision. People with complete achromatopsia cannot perceive any colours; they see only black, white, and shades of gray. It is a condition that may be caused by damage or impact to the cerebral cortex of the brain, rather than abnormalities in the cells of the eye's retina. It is most frequently caused by physical trauma, hemorrhage or tumor tissue growth. On a community or societal level, we could be more sensitized and focus on creating more opportunities for people with such disorders. The least is by attempting to reduce the physical/societal barriers and allowing free exploration. Also, creating awareness and attempting to remove the stigma or taboo surrounding their disorder is another measure that could be adopted.
