Please answer with great detail and examples. Thx!
A. Certain people suffer from what they describe as “post-Christmas depression,” a feeling of letdown after all the excitement of the holiday season. What other explanation can you offer?
B. The research on sensitization of the nucleus accumbens dealt with addictive drugs, mainly cocaine. Would you expect a gambling addiction to have similar effects? How could someone test this possibility?

C. Some people have suggested that ECT relieves depression by causing people to forget the events that caused it. What evidence opposes this hypothesis?

Explanation / Answer

A. The " post Christmas depression " which is also called " seasonal affective disorder (SAD)" or "holiday blues", occurs very mildly in almost all individuals once the festivities and celebration of the season is over and has to go back to the normal routine life. But, this take a serious tone in people who suffer from any form of depression disorder and lives near the poles, as these individuals who are normally in sad mood find the days of festivities where there were lot of beautiful and bright light to be encouraging, they are emotionally charged up by the festive spirit in the atmosphere. These people find meaning and purpose to be engaged in during these days, but once the the festival seasons or holidays are over, it creates an emotional void in them and they suffer the feeling of letting down

B. Studies on sensitization of the nucleus accumbens in relation to addictive drugs have shown evidence that the nucleus accumbens release an increase of dopamine and norepinephrine the pleasure giving chemicals of our brain, this reinforcers the reward pathways of neural network and thus addictions works out. In the same manner addiction to gambling sensitizes the reward center of our brain the nucleus accumbens to release more amount of pleasure chemicals reinforcing the behavior of gambling to get repeated, which leads to addiction. To test this possibility one can test the activity of nucleus accumbens of a gambling addicted individual when the individual is in normal state and engaged in some control activity. The similar test should also be applied when the individual is engaged in the activity of gambling. If there is significant difference in the release of pleasure chemicals during these states, then it be concluded that the sensitization of nucleus accumbens plays a major role in addiction of gambling.

C. The studies of McElhiney et.al (1995) reveals that one of the major side effects of ECT is that it causes memory loss in the patients of depression who recieve such treatments. This treatment is suggested to those patients who have severe depression and suicide ideation. There's always a danger of relapse of another episode of depression within a few months of ECT is another drawback of this treatment as shown by the studies of Riddle and Scott (1993). Thus, the studies reveal its a myth that ECT relieves depression by causing people to forget the events that caused it.
