Aristotle has been known as one of the first political scientists. He was very precise and used topics to write about since he was a realist. He was very strict with what he wrote about. Politics was a subject Aristotle wrote about frequently. He did not try to weaken the government. Two of his popular works are Politics and the Nicomachean Ethics. Both would teach others about politics (Smith, 2012). Plato would be considered the first political philosopher. And the opposite of Aristotle his student. He was considered a radical and dictatorial. He would write about how things should be since he was an idealist. He would constantly try to show weakness in the government (Smith, 2012). Some of Plato’s popular works are The Republic, The Laws and The Statesman. Plato felt that opposing interests between opposite groups in a society could be reconciled. He also felt due to the differences the society would band together and prosper. Differences between Aristotle and Plato’s political philosophies are that Aristotle would try to write about information that was already known regarding the government. And he felt that the way the society was viewed was important and that what he wrote about should be considered beneficial to all members of the society. Plato would try to prove that there was something wrong with the government and that it should be ran a certain way.
Explanation / Answer
The differences between Aristotle and Plato with respect to their political views have been succinctly stated. While Plato, through dialogues concerning his teacher Socrates, took an idealistic approach to politics, Aristotle wrote much more practical advice. Plato strove for a perfect society and advocated for an ideal state that could upload justice by all means possible. On the other hand, Aristotle wanted to improve the existing one.
