From a sociological perspective, many individual behaviors that we tend to believe stems from personal choice can, in fact, be traced to sociological forces. White privilege holds that people who are white or appear to be white (white-passing), are granted a variety of opportunities in life that are not afforded to people of color. When I traveled to Southeast Asia, I was confronted, face-to-face, with the fact that whiteness was indeed considered to be the accepted standard of beauty. I was gathering attention everywhere and even called a "Supermodel". Of course, this was not due to my "good looks" but simply because of the color of my skin.
