A 46-year-old female complained of weakness on the entire left half of her face, which quickly led to facial paralysis on that side. She was unable to wrinkle her forehead, smile, show her teeth, or puff out her cheek on the affected side. She was also unable to close her left eye. A temporary patch protected the exposed eye. Taste perception was distorted over the left anterior portion of the tongue. There was complete recovery of the facial paralysis and taste distortion within two months.
a) Which is the cranial nerve involved in this individual?
b) What is the name of this condition?
c) Why was there facial paralysis on the left half of her face?
d) Why was she unable to smile? Why did she need a patch over her left eye?
e) Why was her taste distorted? Compare this disorder to the major disorder associated with cranial nerve V.
f) Describe the normal functions of both of the cranial nerves discussed above.
Explanation / Answer
A.the nerve involved is cranial nerve 7 i.e,facial nerve.
B.the condition is known as bell 'palsy.
C.infranuclear lesion of the facial nerve at the stylomastoid foramen is known as bell 's palsy ,upper and lower quarters of the face on the same side get paralysed.
D.zygomaticus major muscle responsible for for smiling and laughing by pulling the angle upward and laterally .it is supplied by facial nerve.in this condition facial nerve is damaged so any attempt to smile drwas the mouth to normal side .
Orbicularis oculi responsible for tight closure of eyes which is supplied by facial nerve since it is damaged so unable to close eye .to protect exposed eye slhe needed pathch.
E.chorda tympani is the branch of facial nerve that is the nerve if taste for ant.two thirds of tongue except circumvallate papilla.so there is taste disordered.
Triegeminal nerve chief sensory nerve of the face.headache is common symptom in involvementsof nose ,paranasal sinuse.

Zygomaticus major -smiling
Orbicularis oculi -tight closure of eye
Buccinator -muscle of mastication
Frintalis -wrinkling of face
Trigeminal berve is the chief sensory nerve supply of face through its three branch
