Question

I have to write a comparative research design paper and I'm still not sure on how I should write it. It has to include all of the following requirements below.

Summary of Articles- briefly describe the two articles include the following:

Unit of Analysis (U/A) – Identify the unit of analysis in both of your studies. Why did the authors focus on that specific U/A, and is this U/A the most appropriate? Finally, identify the study that used the best U/A for your topic.

Dependent Variable (DV) –In your studies, identify the dependent variable. Identify the study that used the best DV for your topic and why it is the best DV.

Independent Variable (IV) –Identify the independent variable(s). Also, identify the study that used the best IV for your topic.

Control Variables (CV) – In all of your studies identify the control variables. Also, identify the study that did the best job using CVs.

Sample Design (SD)* – In all of your studies identify the sample design. How was the sample obtained? Does any error enter the study based on the SD? Discuss the generalizability of your studies samples?

Data Design (DD)* – In all of your studies identify how the data was designed/obtained. Does any error enter the study based on the DD?

Explanation / Answer

All research is comparative. Some technical terms like classification vs Typology; dependent vs independent variable; characteristics and goal of comparative research; basic idea of methods of agreement/differences; the problem with these methods.

To write any comparative research paper start with general point or require you to consider two or more ideas or object and compare the main topic. Structure plays an important role in any comparative research paper. You may want to take one particular point, such as the smell of garden roses versus greenhouse roses, and compare those details. Once you use your research to establish your perspective on the point, you can move on to a second point, and so on. You may choose to structure your paper in other ways as well, but you should make sure that you have a logical flow that highlights your research and your point of view.

Step 2: would decide the best method to organize the paper ( compare and contrast papers can be organised in 2 different ways. Neither approach is better, they are different and play differently to your analytical / writing strengths.

a) Holistic Approach: Focus on the concept [In this method of organization, you will first offer your introduction and thesis. You should then briefly summarize each work/concept, noting important points ONLY if you plan to use them later in your comparison section. (So, for example, if you have been asked to compare Aristotle and Constant on their understanding of participation and freedom, your paper would first clarify what Aristotle said about freedom and participation, then discuss Constant regarding freedom and participation.) Then, in the following section, you’ll compare the works and present your assessment. This comparison section can get a bit long since it is probably comparing the two works on multiple points, so you need to be careful to avoid confusion. However, this is a simple structure that may seem easier to approach if you’ve never written a paper like this before or are uncomfortable with the content material.]

b) Head to Head Approach [This method of organization presents your ideas using key points of comparison rather than work/concept. There may be three key points of comparison that are important to your argument, and you’ll compare the works according to these points in three separate paragraphs. (Going back to the Aristotle/Constant question, you would first discuss Aristotle and Constant on freedom, then discuss Aristotle and Constant on participation.) This can help ensure that you fulfil the comparison aspect of the paper but may seem overly complicated if you aren’t that comfortable with the concepts. ]
