Explanation / Answer
I am going to discuss about Auguste Comte, a French Philosopher who is well known for his famous theory of Positivism.
Brief Life History of Comte
Auguste Comte was born on January 19, 1798, in Montpellier, France. Comte’s father, Louis, a government tax official, and his mother, Rosalie (Boyer) Comte, were both monarchists and devout Roman Catholics. However inspired by French Revolution he rejected the ideas of Catholics and adopted republicanism. In 1814, he entered École Polytechnique and proved to be a brilliant mathematician and scientist. He left school before graduating and settled in Paris with no viable way to support himself. He earned a meagre living teaching mathematics and journalism while deep in the study of economics, history and philosophy.
At 19, Comte met Henri de Saint-Simon, a social theorist interested in utopian reform and an early founder of European socialism. Deeply influenced by Saint-Simon, Comte became his secretary and collaborator. In 1824, the partnership ended over disputed authorship of the pair’s writings, but Saint-Simon’s influence remained throughout Comte’s life.
Comte’s Ideas:
Comte developed a social doctrine based on scientific principles. He introduced a new discipline namely Sociology and divided this subject in two categories - “social statics”, which denotes the forces holding society together and “social dynamics”, which indicates the forces responsible for social change.Comte's ideas and use of scientific methods greatly advanced the field. Comte described the epistemological perspective of positivism in The Course in Positive Philosophy, a series of texts published between 1830 and 1842. Comte offered an account of social evolution, proposing that society undergoes three phases in its quest for the truth. These three stages were (1) the theological stage, (2) the metaphysical stage, and (3) the positive stage.
Most of his works reflect the influence of the utopian socialist Henri Saint-Simon with whom he worked as a secretary. He endeavoured to cure the social maladies of the French Revolution with the help of his newly developed positive philosophy. His law of three stages is an attempt to describe the historical sequence of human mind in three steps - theological, metaphysical and positive.
