Question

Choose one step in the memory process, encoding, storage, or retrieval. Then choose one method or technique for improving the processing of information at that stage to make it more likely that the material will be available for retrieval. The method you choose should be something that you can apply in your everyday life. Using at least two sources, describe the technique in as much detail as possible and explain why it works, using the appropriate vocabulary related to the principles involved. Then describe how you would apply this method for your own benefit. The sources should be, in order of preference: Peer-reviewed (professional) journal articles, books on learning and memory, or websites dedicated to one of those topics.

Explanation / Answer

The easiest and the most used strategy to improve your storage aspect of memory is to rehearse the information as much as much so that it can be retrieved later. Like, how we all learned our maths tables in childhood, 6 x 6 = 36, 6 x 7 = 42, and 6 x 8 = 48. Memorizing these facts is rehearsal. Also chunking is most frequently used especially by me when I have to store some phone number or pin number or even a password. Instead of trying to remember 5205550467, you remember the number as 520-555-0467. Breaking this long chain of information into small chunks definitely helps the storage capacity of the memory. You could naturaaly chunk any long piece of information and rehearse it it by repeating the number over and over again. These are our everyday ways for storing information in our short term memory and using it instantly whenevr required. This works in our benefit since big information can be broken down into smaller pieces, which makes it easier to recall it.And using these techniques, makes the information kind of available on our finger tips.
