Question
Subject:EC230/EEC2225 Section 1 Guiding children's behavior. But I chose psychology to be easy. I need this answer by today.
Joey the Dragon
Joey is a little boy whose two teachers often find him challenging. They have a class of 12 children who are 3-4 years old. Most of the time, Joey does not want to participate in any activities the teachers have for the class each day. He wants to play with the trucks in the block center, because that's his very favorite thing to do. If he is told to come over to the rug area for group time, or if he is told to come over to the table for an art activity, he yells, "NO!!!!" and starts to breathe very heavily. He says he is a "big dragon" and will breathe fire everywhere if the adults try to make him move from the area. Joey's teachers don't really enjoy him. They will often argue with him for a few minutes and then just give up and ignore him, allowing him to continue playing with the trucks in order to avoid a big disruption. They don't feel that Joey's parents would care if they were to call them in and talk to them about Joey's behavior and attitude, so they have not reached out to them. Look back through the course and review the content you've explored so far. What concepts and strategies did you learn about that could help you in responding to the following questions? What are two (2) reasons Joey is likely behaving the way he is? What should the adults do first, in order to help improve Joey's attitude? Identify 3-4 strategies Joey's teachers can implement to help improve Joey's behavior. What are your thoughts on this situation, in general, that aren't included in the previous questions?
In a 1-2 page paper, written with proper spelling and grammar, address the items above. Your paper should include the question number and the question, followed by your written response. Be sure to cite any resources you use and put them in APA format.
Explanation / Answer
Hi thanks for your question, the answer to your question is below.
Firstly inorder to assess Joey's behaviour we must observe and assess his behaviour, a good observational assessment usually takes around two weeks. The two main reasons for Joey's behaviour could be a.) Joey has behavioural concerns and b.) Joey may have emtional concerns or a medical condition that needs assessment. Sometimes family situation can also be reinforcing or aggravating a chil'd's problem. Children with behavioural concerns may exhibit a certain behavior due to multiple reasons like attention seeking, avoidance, escape mechanisms etc. Secondly sometimes a chil'd family environment is such due to which he may learn to behave in a certain way by means of observational learning.
The adults in this situation firstly must have an functional assessment done of Joey's behaviour so that if there are any behaviour concerns or if any behaviour is serving some purpose for the child that can be assessment and rectified. Secondly one of his teachers can sit with him sometime to have a chat with him inorder to make him feel comfortable and thus open up about how he actually may be feeling, sometimes a good rapport goes a long way in helping any child!
Some strategies that can be applied inorder to improve Joey's behaviour are-
a.) After an observation and assessment is made, that will basically include the ABC's of the behaviour or A- antecendents of the behaviour or what happened before the problem behaviour B- behaviour C- consequences or what followed right after the problem behaviour, a meeting with Joey's parents will prove to be helpful inorder to know about his home situation and also inform the parents about his situation.
b.) In this example it can be seen that after a try the teachers usually give up on Joey and let him carry on with his behaviour, this inturn strenghtens Joey's behaviour that he repeats each day. Therfore a behaviour modification schedule made for his problem behaviour will help greatly. It's best if a professional guides in doing so.
c.) Joey can be referred to a psychologist inorder to rule out or work on any medical conditions if present. If there is a condition, then it can be worked upon under the guidance of a professional.
d.) A class game involving trucks and dragon can be developed and Joey can be encouraged to participate in it, since he like this it is more likely that he may participate in the game, once he starts to do so, he can slowly be also included in some light class activities. He can be given responsibilities by his teachers so that he begins to feel appriciated and resourceful , which will help him to start listening to teachers little by little.
This situation basically appears to be a behavioural in nature and thus work on his behaviour may help the child immensely and also get the teachers at ease. Sometimes we need to be lower ourselves to a child's level inorder to understand him and help him.
