A generic top-level domain (gTLD) is a TLD or a top-level domain category which can be simply realized by a suffix connected to a domain name. These are used by the Domain Name System or DNS, with maintenance by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority and now regulated by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
Examples of popular gTLDs include com, org, net, info, and biz. Generic as well restricted TLDs that were created in early DNS days needed proof of qualification for domain registration. Now, these TLDs are mil, int, gov, and edu.
Around 2012, ICANN came up with a gTLD expansion project and launched many new gTLDs that have been perceived as a trouble than a way to new creative possibilities. This includes TLDs - ninja and unicorn, among others.
The positives are:
1. Maintaining internet stability.
2. Creating an effective "proof of concept" regarding the presentation of top-level domains.
3, The enhancement of competition for registration services.
4. Utility enhancement of the DNS.
5. Meeting unmet needs.
6. Enhancing the DNS diversity and of registration services.
