Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that affects the mood, energy levels and activity. Individuals with this disorder will experience intense shifts of mood from being extremely elated and happy (manic episodes) to suddenly becoming sad, upset and unhappy (depressive episodes). Usually many people experience mood swings, however, individuals with this disorder have a condition which effects the mood and emotions so much that it interferes with the ability to carry out day to day activities and thus effects one’s academic performance, job and relationships.
There are four categories of bipolar disorder and all of them have symptoms such as changes in mood, energy and the activity level. The first category is called Bipolar I disorder: the individual with this type will have an episode of mania for at least 7 days and usually lasts for about 2 weeks. The individual can also have depressive episodes in the same manner. Usually these episodes alternate. The second type is Bipolar II disorder: it consists mostly of depressive episodes or sometimes hypomanic episodes (manic periods that are not very severe but not a full blown manic episode). It must include at least 1 depressive episode that lasts for 2 weeks and a case of hypomanic for 4 days. The third type is called Cyclothymic Disorder: it includes depressive episodes and hypomania for at least two years.
The diagnosis of bipolar disorder is difficult as it is closely related to other conditions. The risk factors mainly include family history, genetic and brain structure and functioning. Individuals who have immediate family members diagnosed with bipolar have a higher chance of being diagnosed as well. The condition can be treated through medications such as mood stabilizers, antidepressants etc. it can also be treated through psychotherapy which combines counseling and supportive techniques to maintain and regulate normal behavior. Methods like CBT are very successful in helping with the symptoms. Other methods include electroconvulsive therapy, sleep medication. This will be prescribed by the doctor.
