Question

Studies show that racial discrimination is common among low-wage jobs (see page 255 in Golash-Boza), and racial minorities continue to be underrepresented in the top ranks of many professions (business, medical, political, etc.). However, racial minorities have made progress over the past 20 years in getting elected to congress. The 115th congress is the most racially diverse it has ever been (19% of congress members are a racial or ethnic minority, while 34% of newly elected congress members are a racial or ethnic minority.) Do you believe this trend will continue upwards in the future? Do you think the growth in racial and ethnic minorities in politics will have a positive effect in increasing the numbers of racial minorities in other professions? Explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

America is continuously becoming a multi-cultural and pluralistic country where people from almost all parts of the world live together. The society is increasingly becoming tolerant towards, race, color, religion etc. All this was possible because of the global business opportunities and attracting talents from all over the world. Although racism is still prevalent it's not very exclusively expressed instead, it has become more institutionalized racism where the opportunities in terms of employment, housing, medicine, education etc. are not easily available for the racial minorities. Today, politics is one of the most important functional area to represent the issues of the minorities thus gaining political power becomes the focal point of the minorities. Accordingly, the number of people elected to the two houses of America from the minority group is constantly on the rise. As the representation increases, the issues faced by the minorities will also take the center stage and would become the talking point of the two houses which would enable the law makers to find suitable solutions. So, in my opinion, this trend is going to increase and political representation is going to play a major role in it.
