Question

In Chapter 10, you are encouraged to think critically about your stress by first measuring it (using chart by www.mhhe.com/power) and then by thinking of ways to cope effectively with it. We are not always able to change the stressors we face, but we do have control over the methods we use to cope effectively with them. What strategies have you included in your plan? Do you think they will help with physical tension/health or with remaining focused on positive thoughts to help you remain focused?

Explanation / Answer

Some of the stress that I experience as a student are my assignment deadlines, exam fear, friendship issues, relationship problems and peer pressure. I know these are unavoidable and that I need to accept and cope with them effectively. One of the strategies that I use to overcome my stress is my physical exercise. I walk in the park, do some basic stretches and practice breathing which calms me down. At times, I play soccer with my friends. Although I have good friends, I try to avoid them during the week ends as I would like to avoid alcohol and smoking. I have learned to travel alone to places that I like when I'm stressed. I share my stress with one of my close cousins who encourages and motivates me. As for as I'm concerned, stress is part of an organism's life and that one shouldn't look for destructive ways to cope with it.
