Question
III: Diagnosis and Additional Testing Normally, low TSH levels should result in low thyroxin levels, not the reverse. In this case, however, the thyroid gland is producing excess thyroid hormone in the absence of significant TSH. In the absence of TSH, not only does the patient, the thyroid gland is enlarged. This suggests that something other than TSH is stimulating the thyroid gland to hypertrophy and produced excess amounts of T3 and T4. thyroid gland fail to produce thyroid hormones, but it will atrophy (decrease in size). In this 0 Graves' disease: A subset of your immune system antibodies attacks the thyroid gland, causing an increase in the size of the thyroid gland and an increase in thyroid hormone production. Common symptoms include insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, heat sensitivity, weight loss, increased sweating, brittle hair and menstrual cycle changes. Graves' disease is treatable, but autoimmunity is a lifelong problem that has to be carefully managed to avoid symptoms, such as exophthalmos (eye swelling or bulging), as well as other complications.Explanation / Answer
Hi,
Hi
the thyroxine is T4 hormone secreted by thyroid gland. It also involved in feedback loop wherein the higher t4 inhibits secretion of TSH from pitutory. But if auto-antibodies are destroying t4 then feedback is not built up and TSh levels would be high and thyroxine (t4) levels would be low.
Destroying TSH: the t4 levels would go down and so will be the TSH levels.
destroying the TSH reeptor on thyroid gland: this would result in no stimulation of thyroid by TSH. this would lead to low level of thyroxine. SIne feedback loop is not set in, the TSH levels continue to rise.
stimulating TSH receptor on thyroid gland: Increased T4 and low levels of TSH
Destroying thyroxine receptors on pituitory gland: no feedback possible, TSH continues to rise and so is T4
Stimulating: The TSH feedback enhanced leading to low level of both TSH and T4.
