Leadership Challenges in Today’s Environment
What are the challenges facing leaders in today’s environment? Consider both internal and external challenges within an organization.
I believe that there are several internal and external challenges facing leaders in today's environment. One internal challenge facing leaders today is insecurity. Leaders are not prone to their emotions and feelings and when a lot of responsibility is put on someone then it is normal for someone to feel insecure about themselves. If someone is a leader often they may have to make big decisions that can both impact themselves as well as the company they work for, and for that reason some leaders may be indecisive. On the flip side to that there is the internal challenge of being impatient and rushing into a situation that may not be ideal.
There are a variety of external challenges facing leaders as well. One of which being hostility from those who oppose you. There may be people that disagree with you who will make it harder for you to be a leader just because they don’t like the way you are doing things. Another external challenge is public image. Making a decision that could negatively impact the image of yourself or the company you work for could keep a leader from doing their best work. Another external challenge comes monetarily.
Describe the impact of those challenges on today’s leaders. Explain how leaders need to respond to them.
I believe that it is most important for leaders to respond to these challenges in an unbiased way. Meaning they can separate themselves from the situation and even the decisions they are making. This way the leader can ensure that the decisions are best for the company or the people they are leading and that they are not just making the best decision for themselves for their personal reasons.
Discuss at least three–four core competencies that you think leaders need to be effective in today’s environment. Explain how these competencies will address the challenges you identified. - flexible respect, vision
I think leaders need to be flexible. This will allow the leader to be able to quickly adapt to challenges that they will face, internal or external, so that they can make the best decision possible.
I think having a vision is also important. A vision sets guidelines and keeps leaders motivated. A vision also allows leaders to be able to be transparent with who they are leading so that everyone can be aligned with the same goals. Especially important when dealing the internal challenge of insecurity.
Interpersonal communication is also a core competency that I think is important. Especially when it comes to dealing with the external challenge of opposition. Being able to communicate your point effectively and respectfully can help reduce opposition.

1. As per the writer’s finding the challenges which the leaders ace in the modern work place or business environment includes both internal and external. Some of the internal challenges highlighted by the writer are impatient, insecurity, etc. When a lot of responsibility is imposed to a leader due the competitiveness of the organization, organizational goals etc the leaders may become impatient or feel in secured about their decisions which can impact his performance and hence become a major challenge. Some other internal challenges are inability to direct or coordinate, Lack of decisiveness, defensiveness etc which are the major internal barrier for the success of the leaders.
Some of the external challenges highlighted by the writer includes the being hostility towards the people who opposes him. It is agreeable that if the leader is opposed by the set of people then he could not be hostile towards them. This trait has to be developed by the leader for being successful. Another challenge as per the writer is the public image which can be destroyed through any wrong decision. This challenge can impact the leaders very badly through generating the fear of making appropriate decision. Some of the external challenges which can be included by the writer are political impact which can govern the decision making skills of leaders and the financial crisis of the organization or the economic situation.
2. The discussion of the writer highlights the impact of the described challenges on the leaders and how they should respond to those challenges. Responding to the challenges in an unbiased manner is an ideal suggestion provided by the writer. According to him through being unbiased the leaders can make decision without considering the situation so as to make a wise decision. The visionary leaders have a clear vision about their path of success and can reach goals easily. This trait can eliminate the fear of the public image. The visionary leaders are more transparent and are self motivated which eliminate the barrier of being a successful leader.
Respect forms another trait which is important or the leader to be successful. The leaders with good interpersonal skills makes them more effective and also keeps them self motivated.
