In Chs.9-10 we discuss many example of companies that have 'faulty products/services' due to a quality issue(s). Quality issues lead to at minimum two things: (1) higher costs and therefore lower profitability: and (2) often injuries (including death) to consumers (and sometimes employees). You are to write a professional 4-5+ page paper (APA-format) in which you will select a company that has had a major quality issue (nothing earlier than 2007 without pre-approval from professor) and discuss the impact on the firm's revenues, market share, costs (warranty, replacement, repair, etc.), etc. What actions (or inactions) led to the quality issue? Nestle's biggest product supply chain in India: Maggi (often pronounced as Mag-eee)
Executive Summary: The world’s biggest food and food company stumbled into a publicity debacle that price it a billion bucks. A cautionary tale of mangled crisis management on associate degree epic scale.
A food inspector working at Uttar Pradesh government, Sanjay Singh who spotted the label that claimed “no added MSG (monosodium glutamate)” on the bright-yellow packets of Maggi noodles in March 2014 during one of his routine raids on retail outlets. MSG is a polemical ingredient that’s legal in Asia, however, needs speech act and a warning that the merchandise isn't-counseled for youngsters below twelve months recent. Later on, these samples were sent to the state laboratory at Gorakhpur for testing by Singh (Ph.D. in organic chemistry). Positive results came after a few weeks that sample of Maggi contains MSG. In June 2014, Central Food Laboratory in Kolkata started testing these samples of Maggi and after almost one year in April 2015 results read: “MSG: Present and Lead: 17.2ppm (parts per million)”. The amount of lead found was over 1,000 times more than what Nestle India Ltd had claimed.
Firm Overview: Maggi was originated in Switzerland in the late 19th century. It is an international brand of seasonings, sauces, cuppa mania, instant soups, and noodles. Later on, in 1947 it was acquired by Nestle. Maggi was the first to bring seasoning and sauces on meals in 1886.
Actions/ Inactions: June 3, 2015: There was an FIR (First information report) was lodged for India's Bollywood superstars like Amitabh Bachchan, Preeti Zinta and Madhuri Dixit by one lawyer Sudhir Kumar Ojha of Muzzafarpur District court. He reported that he purchased Maggi from a nearby shop and he fell ill after eating it. This impacted sale of Maggi for 15 days in New Delhi.
After tests carried out which included a high amount of lead used in the preparation of Maggi, Gujrat FDA banned Maggi's production, storage for 30 days and Assam also banned sale and distribution.
Later on, Andra Pradesh government also banned the sale of Maggi. Later on, there was a nationwide ban on the sale, production, storage and distribution of Maggi.
Only export of Maggi was allowed by Mumbai High court as the ban was only in India.
Later FDA results came out from US health regulator which stated that there are no harmful lead levels in the product.
