Discuss the similarities and differences between the sensory receptors of the semicircular canals (crista ampullaris) and the vestibule (macula). Draw a simple illustration of each identifying landmarks.
Explanation / Answer
Semicircular canal and vestibule both are found in inner ear. There are three semicircular canal namely transverse, longitudinal and vertical. In each of semicircular canal there is the presence of crista ampularis. Crista ampularis is the sensory organ for balance. These semicircular canal sense the body movement and rotations. It receive the signal and send it to the brain via vestibulocochlear nerve for maintanence of body balance. Semicircular canal is filled with perilymp. Hair cells are present in perilymp which senses the body movement. Semicircular canal and crista ampularis senses the angular acceleration means rotational movement of the body whereas vestibule or macula senses the longitudinal acceleration means horizontal movement of the body. Both semicircular canal and vestibule senses body movement and send it to the brain via vestibulocochlear nerve.
