Explanation / Answer

Facial nerve disease: ( bells palsy) anatomy of facial nerve: it is the 7 the carnial nerve and it is a mixed nerve containning motor , sensory and parasympathetic fibers, the nucleus of the facial nerve are motor nucleus and nucleus solitarios and superior salivatory nucleus, and the functional components ofthe facial nerve are divided into 4 components they are motor fibers, parasympathetic , taste fibers , sensory,. pathway of the facial nerve : it is a complex pathway it is divided into to 2 they intracranial and extracranial , the nerve arises fromthe pons , it begins as 2 roots a large motor and small sensory root these 2 roots travel through the internal acoustic meatus long opening in the petrous part of the temporal bone then within the temporal bone the roots leave the internal acoustic meatus and then enterrs the facial canal the canal is z shaped within the canal first the 2 roots fuses to form the facial nerve and then the nerve forms the geniculate ganglion then nerve gives rises to greater petrosal nerve and nerve to stapedius and chorda tympani then the facial nerve exits the facial canal via the stylomastoid foramen and after exiting the skull the facial nerve turns superiorly to run just anterior to the outer ear then the 1st extracranial branch arises are posterior auricular nerve and motor branches to the posterior belly of the diagastric muscles and the stylohyoid muscle, then the main trunk of the nerve the motor root continues anteriorly and inferiorly into the parotid gland and within the parotid galnd the neve terminates by splitting into 5 branches they are temporal, zygomatic, baccal, marginal mandibular branch and cervical branch. Risk factors:the condition that comprises the immune system and patient with diabetes are more likely to develop bells palsy and pregnant women also likely to prone for it and bacterial infections , neurological disorders, traumatic injury, tumors, viruses. signs and symptoms of bells palsy:the patient cannot able to close the eyelids or blink, eyes waters more or less than usual , drooling, difficult chewing, facial muscles twitch, pain or numbness behind ear this is mostly seen on one side of the face. when the patient have symptoms of stroke such as numbness , tingling, weakness of the face, sudden vision changes, sudden trouble speaking, sudden confusions , sudden problems with walking or balance and severe sudden headache then call for primary care.
