Include a description of the hormones secreted by the thyroid gland.

Include a description of the hormones secreted by the pituitary and hypothalamus that control the thyroid gland.

Include a discussion about how thyroid hormones affect the body.

Include a discussion about how thyroid hormones are regulated by negative feedback.

Explanation / Answer

THYROID GLAND

Thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland, present at back of neck. The main fucntion of thyroid gland is to release hormones that regulate metabolism, body temperature, heart rate and other important processes.
Tyroid gland has two types of cells. Follicular cells that regulate secretion of thyroid hormones and Parafollicular cell that secret calcitonin.
There hormones secreted by thyroid gland plays a key role in maintaining body's normal processes.
The hormones are thyroxine and calcitonin.
Thyroxine : Two hormones, triiodothyronin (T3) and thyroxine (T4) are released from follicular cells to regulate metabolism, heart rate, tryglycerides regulations , maintaining body temoerature and regulating menstrual cycle.
Calcitonin : It helps in enhancing bone calcium levels treansporting calcium from blood to bones.
Hypothalamus secrets thyrotropin releasing hormone that acts on pituitary gland. In response pituitary gland releases TSH ( thyroid stimulating hormone) what acts on thyroid gland to secret thyroxine. This mechanism is stimulated when body experiences low thyroxine levels in blood.
Thyroid hormones have extensive effects on body such as affecting memory , causing depression and mood swings , losing hairs , inducing gallstones , irregualar heart beats , increased BP levels , constipation , acidity , irregular menstrual activities and weakness.
The maintainance of thyroid hormones by negative feedback such that, when body have high levels of thyroid hormones, it prevents the release of TRH ans TSH.
Irregular secretions and thyroid gland abnormalities may lead to severe disorders.
1) Goiter : Abnormal enlargement of thyroid gland caused by lack of iodine in blood. As there is lack of iodine, which stimulates thyroixe secretion, there is shortage of thyroxine in blood that makes the gland work more harder leading to enlargement.
2) Hyper thyroidism : It is the condition when thyroid gland secrets excess of thyroxine leading to rapid heart beat, irritability and profound sweating.
3) Hypothyroidism : Low thyroid hormones levels that leads to slow heart rate and metabloic problems.
