Question

Maria a 30 year old woman has been trying to get pregnant for a while but nothing has worked so far although all is fine with her husband. She visited her gynecologist and mentioned that she had been experiencing extra heavy menstrual flow in recent months. In addition to this, she has been having recurring pain in her pelvic region more severe during her period.   Routine blood and urine tests all turned up negative. Her gynecologist suggested laparascopy to help discover the cause or source of problem .

1. Based on all the symptoms, what is Maria's EARLY or suspected diagnosis?

2. What is a LAPARASCOPY? Brief answer please

3. What did the Laparascopy reveal to CONFIRM the diagnosis?

4. How does this DIAGNOSIS  explain her difficulty in getting pregnant?

Explanation / Answer

1. Maria is suffering from heavy menstrual bleeding and recurring pain in the pelvic region which gets severe during her periods and of course infertility. The suspected diagnosis for this is Endometriosis. In case of endometriosis, the tissue lining the inside of the uterus also known as Endometrium grows outside the uterus. It causes a lot of pain in the pelvic region along with heavy menstrual bleeding and Infertility.

2. Basically laparascopy is procedure used for the diagnosis of patients. In this procedure an instrument known as laparascope is inserted through the abdominal wall in order to examine the different organs inside the abdomen.

3. The Laparascopy revealed the presence of scar tissue which is definitely Endometriosis. This scar tissue can be removed using laparascopic surgery. The surgery may include removal of tissue with excision or Ablation.

4. Endometriosis can cause distortion of pelvic organs, it may lead to the formation of cysts in ovaries. Also, endometriosis can damage the Fallopian tubes and damage the tissue lining the uterus. All of these leads to infertility. So, the diagnosis of Endometriosis clearly explains the difficulty in getting pregnant.
