I reinstalled Office but my File menu is still missing

I am missing the File and Edit commands from my Excel for Mac 2011. So far all my attempts to reinstate them have failed.

I reinstalled the software because of this problem and for a brief period while I downloaded the updates to enable Outlook to work, the File and Edit commands were visible. When the problem with Outlook was resolved by the updates, the File and Edit commands disappeared.

Explanation / Answer

This is why reinstalling software on a Mac is almost always a waste of time. Applications just don't corrupt very often. Instead it's almost always Preferences that develop errors.

Unlike Windows, where reinstallation typically overwrites the Registry values, Preferences are typically left untouched by a reinstall, and Office apps will suck in the corrupted data when they start up. And reinstallation may selectively overwrite some ancillary files and leave others untouched, resulting in a mix of files of varying updates which is almost sure to cause problems.

Unless you completely uninstalled Office prior to reinstallation, you should proabably uninstall and reinstall again, applying all updates.

If you did uninstall prior to reinstallation, then follow this KB article, which, in part, tells you to (with all Office apps closed) delete the

Microsoft Excel Toolbars

file from thee User:Library:Application Support:Microsoft:Office:Preferences:Office 2011 folder.

If that doesn't worrk, post back - there are a couple of (much) less common causes of this (including add-inss!).
