Question

Formula invisible until refers to real data

I have a simple multiplication formula that I have copied by pulling down the column. I think previously (been using excel for 25 years...) the formula has been visible (in the editing window when selected) even though the arguments (cells) have been empty.

Now if I select true cell it looks empty in the editing window until I fill both the cells that are multiplied.

Is this something that can be configured (to make them visible again,

Thanks in advance!!,

Explanation / Answer

What you're experiencing is completely normal... It is the feature enabled by Excel> Preferences> Edit - Extend data range formats and formulas.

In you sample file the formula actually had not yet been copied to row 31. However, Excel recognizes that row as an extension of the data range established in C3:E30. When & only when you enter values in D31 & E31 the formula is automatically extended to C31. If you go on to enter values in D32 & E32 the formula will be extended automatically to C32, & as long as you continue to extend the data range by appending values in columns D/E the formula will be carried down for you, you won't have to copy it yourself.
