1- An information security manager routinely monitored Web surfing among her company’s employees. She discovered that many employees were visiting the “sinful six” Web sites. (Note: The “sinful six” are Web sites with material related to pornography, gambling, hate, illegal activities, tastelessness, and violence.) She then prepared a list of the employees and their surfing histories and gave the list to management. Some managers punished their employees. At work place it fine to monitor the web surfing of each individuals, as in the work environment, its manager's duty to ensure that every process was going fine. Things like unnecessary surfing, porn sites, gambling was thread to proper function of any office setup. So regular monitoring on web history by manager is fine and much needed.
Is employee Web surfing on the “sinful six” ethical? Support your answer.
No, Web surfing on "sinful six" at any office environment is not so ethical. If employee surf such a content at his/her home is fine, as it was their private space, they have full freedom on what they can do.But office is public setup, we should follow few ethics at office.
Is the security manager’s submission of the list of abusers to management ethical? Why or why not?
Yes, the periodical update to the managment is fine, as they have to know who are all doing such a stuff, and how to avoid it in future. However, before submitting to the management, the security manager may warn them at initial stage, to give chance to correct their mistakes. If the activity of abusers continous, then sure one have to forward those to information to the higher managment peoples.
Is punishing the abusers ethical? Why or why not? If yes, then what types of punishment are acceptable?
Everyone deserves some chance to correct their mistakes, so intial warning should be given to those abusers. If the abusers are continuing such a activity, then it is necessary to punish those abusers.
The punishment may vary from suspension , penalty upto Dismiss.
What should the company do in this situation?
At first hand the company should give a brief discussion over surfing policies, that should include do's and dont's as well as the legal sites to visit from company devices.
Also there are various technical solution available to restrict those six sin contents reaching the employee system. With the help of security manager the company can block the access to those sites from company systems.
Finally it was responsibility of both employee and employer to have decent surfing at work environment.
