Subnetting Network help
How do I find the host bits per subnet and useable hosts per subnet? I'm pretty sure the rest is correct, all we were given was the Host IP Address and Subnet Mask.
Host Ip Address 172.30.1.30
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Subnet Bits ????
# of subnets ????
Number of host bits per subnet ???
Number of useable hosts per subnet ??????
subnet address for this Ip address : 172.30.1.0
Ip Address of first host on this subnet 172.30.1.1
ip address of last host on this subnet 172.30.1.254
Broadcast address for this subnet 172.30.1.255
Explanation / Answer
Subnet Mask = 11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000
Total number of subnet bits = Number of 1's in the subnet mask.
= 24
Number of subnets = 2n - 2 (where n is the total number of 1's in the subnet mask)
= 224 - 2 = 16777214
Number of host bits per subnet = Number of 0's in the subnet mask
= 8
Number of usable hosts per subnet = 2n - 2 (where n is number of 0's in the subnet mask)
= 28 - 2 = 256-2 = 254
