Need help to answer these questions, Please help if you can.

Most people interact with relational databases on a regular basis often without being aware of it. Online shopping, a doctor’s or health insurance company’s patient information database, online banking information; all of these examples use relational databases.

In preparation for this week’s Discussion, review this week's multimedia presentation "Databases and Database Design." Reflect on the advantages of the relational database model as discussed in this presentation. Consider the key issues in database design and the process for developing a relational database.

With these thoughts in mind, answer the following questions:

How would you gather and organize the categories of information required for a complex database?

What issues does a public health professional need to be aware of when designing a relational database?

What are some strategies for addressing those issues?

Explanation / Answer

Gathering and organizing information:
For a complex database design gathering information is most important. The various categories of information required are to be identified. Various categories information that is needed and the relationship between them are to be gathered. The categories of information are to be organized in a manner they are needed, their importance and frequency of data access.

A complex database contains various relational databases. All the databases that are needed for the system are to be known. And then the tables required for each database and then the entities and relations in each table are to be gathered

The issues that a public health professional need to be aware of when designing a relational database are:

·         The requirements of the database design and the concepts need to be involved.

·         The information that is to set for easy access

·         The access restrictions

·         The relations between the tables so that the access can be easy and helpful etc.

·         Data dependency, redundancy etc.

·         Requirement for data availability

Some of the strategies that can be followed are:

·         Minimization of data redundancy.

·         Normalization

·         Ensuring data integrity

·         Ensuring data consistency

·         Maintaining backup and recovery
