Question
Consider the following opinion: “To keep all order-pickers occupied, they must have work to do; therefore it is advantageous to put the fastest workers at the start of the pick aisle so that they can quickly move work-in-process to downstream workers.” How would you expect such an arrangement to work in a fast-pick aisle? What sorts of problems would you expect? (Assume workers may not pass one another.)
Explain why the benefits to be gained from bucket brigades might be greater when there are more pickers in the aisle.
What are the most convenient storage positions on a carousel? Ex plain.
True or false? Explain your reasoning.
Carousels are well-suited to product that sells in large quantities.
• Carousels are well-suited to product that is frequently requested.
• An AS/RS will increase efficiency if it performs all put-aways separately from all retrievals.
• An A-frame is not a forward pick area because the cost per retrieval is zero.
Explanation / Answer
1) Placing the fastest order pickers at the start of the pick aisle will be advantageous to the slow to medium moving aisles. But in a fast pick aisles, all the order pickers should be considerable fast to pick the orders. Because, by being fast, the item that is passed from one worker to other worker will also be faster. In a fast moving aisle, one fast order picker will not suffice the situation. One order picker bing faster and others being slow would create a bottleneck in the system. Placing a slow order picker in the fast moving aisle will be a constraint to the efficiency of the system.
2) When a series of bins that are linked together in a continuos chain and mounted on an elongated oval track, it is called carousel. The track is generally horizontal, but in some situations it is vertical to save floor space.
The most convenient storage position on Carousal is - Vertical carousal. Vertical carousels are essentially horizontal units that rotate in a vertical plane. Vertical carousel units are enclosed in a metal housing and have an opening to store and pick goods through. Vertical carousels provide the same features as horizontal units with the added benefits of better utilization of vertical building space and better security provided by the unit's enclosure.
