Honda Motors is a largest manufacturer of automobiles worldwide such as motorcycles, scooters, cars, aircrafts, engines, outboard motors etc. In the United States it is known as American Honda Motors. The information system that had been implemented in American Honda Motors is Management Information System(MIS).

The company adopts a just-in-time management approach which consists of the philosophies in management and practices. It can be termed as an integration of social and technical systems. Therefore, in order to integrate their services to the manufacturer by organizing production and logistics, and also co-ordination with the suppliers and customers, it has implemented a Management Information System (MIS) as an Executive Support System(ESS).

The Executive Support System in American Honda Motors has been customized according to the just-in-time approach adopted in the company. Thus it helps to generate reports that helps the company to reduce waste. The MIS reports showcases the production time, number of workers in production units, available stocks, number of defective products, ordering time etc. Thus a MIS in American Honda Motors is designed based on the work practices and approaches in production. Thus these MIS reports helps the company to identify over-burden, inconsistency in the manufacturing process thus eliminating waste to a maximum. These reports address elimination of waste through overproduction, waiting time, transportation, processing, stock in hand, waste through movement, by manufacturing defective items and products, waste of underutilized staff.

Executive Support System, otherwise known as ESS is a tool that helps the organization to generate valuable information out of the data. It is a reporting tool or software that has been widely used in organizations. ESS is implemented in organizations as pre-designed packages for one particular industry or they can be customized according to the needs of the organization.

On the other hand, a Transaction Processing System is also a software that processes various transactions that occur within the organizations on a daily basis. It is considered as the foundation for various operations. Operational transactions such as purchase orders, sales orders, invoices, customer orders are handled through transaction processing systems.

An ESS is a reporting tool that generates summarized reports over a period of time. An MIS can form a part of a Transaction Process System.
