You have been asked to reduce inventory by establishing a kanban system. The daily production (demand) rate is 450 boxes. The production lead time is 2 days. They want to keep 0.35 days of safety stock on hand in finished goods (the safety stock factor) in order to respond quickly to spikes in demand. The kanban size is 72 boxes (which is roughly one pallet's worth of sandwiches).

Total quantity of safety stock ( @0.35 days of inventory ) = 0.35 x 450
Total number of boxes which should be in the system
= Daily production demand x Lead time ( days) + safety stock
= 450 x 2 + 450 x 0.35
= 450 x 2.35

Therefore , number of Kanbans
= Total number of boxes in the system / 72
= 450 x 2.35/72
= 14.68 ( 15 rounded to higher whole number )
