Question
I work in a major organization that has a established workforce recruitment mantra – DIVERSITY. This diversity comprises, among other parameters the sexual orientation and gives a opportunity to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgenders. It also offers openings to Persons with Disabilities and Women. Graduate hire girls are also a major factor for hiring.
Inspite of the recruitment of the organization framing such policies, it can be seen in a majority of the projects / processes that a suitable chunk of diversity comes only from fresh graduated girls. To a certain extent, the other categories too.
Each one of these diversity categories offers various opportunities to show case their talents.
In the month of June, LGBT screen movies related to sexual orientation . In the month of March, it is women empowerment due to “Women’s Day”. We also have special recruitment programmes for PwD. Now the onus is on to hire veterans .
It has always been seen that irrespective of diversity , there are issues with inclusion or equity.
These are driven down from organizational factors to managerial factors – it is only upto the resource’s reporting manager on whether there is a inclusive atmosphere, or all opportunities are equitable.
Having said this, I would not comment across religious lines.
Religion and culture go hand in hand , and for the reason that one could not change any Islamic practices in the Middle East / Africa, why and how can we comment on the other practices followed by other religions / cultures / nations ? When we have multi national corporations working all over the world, with a normal weekend being Saturday and Sunday, we have regions where this basic fundamental itself is questioned.
While it was hitherto taboo for a female to drive a car in the Saudi so far, the workplace of todays society take pride in pushing a female to be the CEO and are rewarded by governments for this drive !
Explanation / Answer
Think for a moment about the diversity of your own team or organization. What is it like? Make some notes on that paper/document you’ve got going from the earlier exercise.
Follow-up question: How would your feelings and reactions change if you were of a different race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion than you are?
To be a diverse organization simply means that you have the presence of differences of identity (e.g., gender and people of color) throughout your organization. However, an organization can be diverse without being inclusive. A company can be diverse without being equitable.
