Question

Answer: No, U.S should not trade with any country which is in violation of labour laws and other human rights activity. The awareness in the U.S citizens about the human rights and conditions of the workers in the developing countries is on the rise. In the past the well known companies like Nike and Apple have been under public criticism and also faced boycott calls when there were incidences reported about the violation of human rights and inhuman conditions of the workers in their supply chain. These incidences took place in the countries like China and Pakistan where the labour laws and human rights laws are not stringent. Therefore if U.S conducts business with countries where there are violations of labour laws and other human rights activity it will result in negative criticism by the citizen.

U.S has a strong reputation at the global level as a pioneer in labour law reforms and commitment towards the protection of human rights. In the past U.S has also taken action against the countries who were involved in the human rights violation. Hence if U.S is going to enter into trade with such countries then it will lose its ethical stand as an advocate of human rights. The countries which have a bad record in terms of labour laws and human rights violations are also faced with political instability and unrest. Doing business in such countries can also be counterproductive if some type of strife breaks out. It is therefore advisable that U.S should not trade with any country which is in violation of labour laws and other human rights activity.
