Question
I think the concept of Deep-Level Diversity is a very underrated aspect of workplace diversity. While Surface-Level Diversity is observable (age, gender, race, etc.) and protected by legislation, Deep-Level Diversity includes differences in personalities, attitudes, beliefs, and values. My questions to you as future managers and leaders are:
1. How would promote and increase Deep-Level Diversity in the workplace?
2. Why is Deep-Level Diversity such an important concept in the realm of workplace diversity?
Explanation / Answer
Answer: (1) The deep level diversity can be promoted through personal initiatives like mentorship and guidance. As a leader I will mentor the people and guide them to respect the differences which exist in terms of personality, attitudes, beliefs and values. By guiding the people about the importance and logic of having deep level diversity will help in educating them about its importance. When people have understanding about an issue, they tend to handle it with care and caution. This helps in creation of a common culture where the differences like personality and values are accommodated. Guidance by the leader makes the people aware about the importance of diversity and helps them to develop diversity management skills. This creates a favourable climate inside the organizations for the promotion and development of in-depth diversity.
(2) Deep level diversity is important because just hiring people from the different cultural and social backgrounds does not develops diversity but on the other hand it may cause conflicts and organizational politics because of the difference in the opinions. Through in depth diversity these differences can be sorted out and understanding can be developed. This understanding is important for the creation of synergy and brings the positive impacts of diversity inside the organization. Thus deep level diversity is an important concept in the realm of the workplace.
