Design Scenario
The WVCC case study in this chapter left some design decisions to the reader. In particu- lar, the case study doesn’t mention actual product selections made by the network designers. Making these selections is your job. Read through the case study and answer the following questions.
Based on the design requirements and decisions that have been made, what wireless access points would you recommend for WVCC? Do some Internet research to find an access point that will meet WVCC’s needs and write two or three paragraphs about the product and why you chose it.
To accomplish user authentication for the private WLAN, WVCC’s IT department will purchase a dedicated one-RU hardened appliance that will operate as a central- ized RADIUS server. Do some Internet research to find such a server that will meet WVCC’s needs and write two or three paragraphs about the product and why you chose it.
WVCC has decided to purchase a standalone firewall. Reread the “Improved Performance and Security for the Edge of the Network” section of the chapter to understand WVCC’s requirements for the firewall. Do some Internet research to find a firewall that will meet WVCC’s needs, and write two or three paragraphs about the product and why you chose it.
WVCC’s IT department would like to deploy a solution for managing the wireless network. The solution should allow the network administrators to remotely manage the access points and discover any rogue access points that students or faculty might install without permission from the IT department. Either a hardware appliance or a software application that runs on a shared server will meet the need. Do some Internet research to find a wireless management product that will meet WVCC’s needs, and write two or three paragraphs about the product and why you chose it.
Explanation / Answer
WVCC requires two access points, one is required to provide the open access points for each building. Both the access points must function in different channels to avoid interference. The access point should support IEEE 802.11n standard and 600 Mbps bandwidth. Each access point should be capable of supporting 25 users at a time.
Based on the design requirements and decisions that have been made, two wireless networks are recommended for WVCC. Those are Cisco Aironet 1250 series access point and Linksys Business LAPN600 access point. These two access points fulfill all the requirements of WVCC.
The following design considerations and steps have to be taken out for the implementation of the WVCC project:
Network devices that are needed to implement RADIUS server are:
Similar dedicated server like RADIUS server for centralized processing are:
The Firewall protects the computer from being attacked. The WVCC project needs some protection from the hackers, viruses and worms.
Shield firewall of version 5.0 is a standalone best firewall system, which matches best for WVCC. It has great features which has price less than $20 USD. It has feature of Zone alarm pro. Installation is free and also it supports email and phone.
