The picture 2 represents the traditional production system where manual control is exercised over the processes involved in production. The flowchart represents the sequence of activities with workload assigned to different resources.
Picture 1 shows an integrated production management and control system that manages the same process with help of automated and integrated modules that enable the manager to see the whole process as one unit. The integrated system has following advantages.
(a) A virtual link between the processes enables to see a larger picture, with better visibility facilitating efficient control.
(b) The PDC helps to optimise and control the process, thus increasing efficiency. It also helps to enhance productivity through taking inputs from past data, correcting and reporting the aberrations.
(c) Process incorporates data from all relevant inputs, thus eliminating need of manual intervention, thus reducing time ,increasing productivity and reducing the chances or error.
(d) Reports generated by the systems make monitoring and decision making easy.
(e) Helps to enhance inter department communication, thus reducing formalities and saving time.
(f) Saves on cost by optimisation, error reduction, process control, reducing human effort and quality improvement.
