Question

Consider three different processors P_1, P_2 and P_3 executing the same instruction set. P_1 has a 3 GHz clock rate and a CPI of 1.5. P_2 has a 2.5 GHz clock rate and a CPI of 1.0. P_3 has a 4.0 GHz clock rate and has a Which processor has the highest performance expressed in instructions per second? If the processors each execute a program in 10 seconds, find the number of cycles and the number of instructions. Translate the following code instruction to MIPS assembly Instruction. Write instruction sequence to store and at the beginning of a procedure onto the stack. For the contents of registers and what is the value of after the following assembly code sequence is run Show the steps

Explanation / Answer

4. Given data:-
Given processes are P1, P2, P3
   Clock rate   CPI
P1   3 GHz   1.5
P2   2.5 GHz   1
P3   4 GHz   2.2

Solution:-
a) To find the processor that has highest expressed in instructions per second.
Calculation:-
For P1
Performance = clock rate/ CPI
Substitute the values,
performance = 3GHz / 1.5 = 2 * 109 instructions/sec
For P2
performance = 2.5GHz / 1.0 = 2.5 * 109 instructions/sec
For P3
performance = 4GHz / 2.2 = 1.82 * 109 instructions/sec
From the above calculation, it can be clearly seen that P2 has the highest performance processor
b)
It is given that each processor executes a program in 10 secs.
Then calculate the no. of cycles and no. of instructions that require to complete this program.
Calculation for no. of cycles:-
No. of cycles in P1= 10 x 3 x 109= 30 x 109 s
No. of cycles in P2= 10 x 2.5 x 109= 25 x 109 s
No. of cycles in P3= 10 x 4 x 109= 40 x 109 s

Calculation for No. of instructions:-
No. of instructions in P1= no. of cycle / CPI
Substitute the values,
No. of instructions in P1=30 x 109 s/ 1.5= 20 x 109
Similarly,
No. of instructions in P2=25 x 109 s/ 1 = 25 x 109
No. of instructions in P1=40 x 109 s/ 12.2 = 18.18 x 109
