Question

Please help, I'm having a hard time figuring this out. Thanks!

Consider the template strand on some region of the DNA with the sequence 3'CAT5'.

a. Assume this transcript is really a tRNA gene and the sequence is where the anticodon is located. What is the codon sequence on the mRNA where this tRNA is used in translation?

b. Continue to assume this region has the transcript for a tRNA gene. What is the sequence of the coding strand for this gene?

c. Now, assume this region is part of an miRNA sequence. What is this sequence on the mRNA that it silences?

Explanation / Answer

template strand has sequence complementary to mRNA i.e. mRNA will have sequence 5'GUA3'

coding starnd is also complementary to the template strand thus the coding strand sequence will be same as mRNA except that Uracil is replaced by Thymine i.e.5'GTA3'

miRNA silences mRNA with sequence 3'GUA5'
